Generally you want to be on the inside.
Use starboard/port rules and Rule 18 (buoy room rule) to your
advantage. Usually, you want to
set up wide and round tight to the mark to stay as far upwind as
possible for the final beat. Set
up wide and try to use the sails and heel to help minimize the amount of
rudder you need to turn. Sharp
turns around the mark are slow.
To avoid entanglements at the mark, get the spinnaker and board down
early. However, if the crew is
good, keeping the spinnaker up for a few extra seconds can gain you an
advantage over your competitors
