Lay lines are as important downwind as they are upwind. At the end of the downwind leg, Blue’s correct tactic is to force Yellow past the lay line. Blue must jibe first at the lay line because he is behind. If Blue waits until Yellow jibes, then Yellow will preserve his lead. Yellow sailed past the lay line, and now finds Blue’s wind shadow blocking his final approach. Yellow has no hope of breaking through from the outside and to leeward. |
