Keeping the boat moving forward is essential!

With all the sails released, do an un-natural thing:
Bring the tiller back to center. Recall that you have been trying to keep the bow down to prevent a roundup. At this point there is nothing you can do to steer the boat where you want it to go and the rudder is acting like a brake, slowing and eventually stopping the forward movement of the boat. If you can keep the boat moving by centering the rudder, the boat may well recover and you can then steer the bow down and reset the sails.
