Play the wind shifts. In lighter air you can get so involved in keeping the boat moving that you loose track of tactics and fail to take advantage of the oscillating breeze. Keep track of compass headings and the competition. You are not just trying to survive the leg but to attack the boats ahead. Before you jibe, head up quite high to build boat speed. Immediately following the jibe, head up again to rebuild boat speed. Then return to the VGM. In very light air, it’s extremely important to avoid wind shadows of other boats. Going fast, realizing shifts and keeping your air clear plays an important role is sailing a successful leg. Hugh gains can be made downwind in very light conditions
