From these readings you can also deduce the favored end of the start line.
From about the middle of the start line, you can head the boat at the windward mark and take a compass reading.
The bearing from the windward mark to the leeward mark is always 180 degrees away from the windward mark, if the race committee set the course correctly, which they usually do.
